Why more than one painting at a time?

A day in which I only did one painting due to the onset of night and loss of light.
A day in which I only did one painting due to the onset of night and loss of light.

So the issue of my painting several paintings in a sitting has arisen.

Why paint several works in a day? Why paint more than one at a time?  Isn't it about making a painting beautiful?

First, consider me indecisive.  I want to paint everything.  I find something in almost everything I see that is interesting and/or inspiring and/or challenging and/or beautiful.  So I want it all.  It is perhaps the artist's eye that keeps looking for such or it can be a discontent in 'just seeing without seeing'. Perhaps it is just how we think and learn.  For me, I am sure it is tied to learning and enjoying the amazing things I see.  That childlike sense of great pleasure at seeing something new and wanting it.  So I paint and imprint it in my brain.

What about the quest for beauty?  Well, there is beauty everywhere if looking with an artist's eye, even in things not traditionally considered 'beautiful'.  And what is 'beauty' anyway?  Can it be that spark of nostalgia and/or being brought to a dreamy state? Can it be the joy you feel when you discover something new? Is it that momentary feeling of being fulfilled for some odd reason or another?

How much is instilled in our brain by our times, our society or the 'in-crowd'?  How much is ingrained in the human brain through biobehavioral adaptation, that is do we love landscapes because for thousands of years we have looked to the horizon for purposes of finding food and now for travel?

Art in museums has taught us that beauty can take many forms.  We can learn from so many things and be fulfilled.  And is art truly only about beauty or is it of value because it can teach us to see and think in a new way?  This blog will be continued, time to go paint. But I leave you with an image which is the sole painting from that day.  Is it any better than the ones executed on days in which I painted multiple works?
