The Iron Pour

two studies 'The Iron Pour' and 'Tending The Flame'

So here are the two images I painted yesterday at Salem Art Works.  They are studies, that is oil sketches, and I did them with the intent to practice and learn how to record an event through paint.  Might I use them as the basis for finished works, possibly; but most likely their sole purpose will end up being just 'to learn'.  How quickly can I paint to record an event?  What happens when I do so?  With practice can I develop the skill to create a decent painting while recording such an event?  etc, and so forth.

When I arrived at the venue to photo a painting of mine that was in the gallery, I discovered they were setting up for the iron pour.  It sounded really interesting so I went to paint the storage shed for the 1 1/2 hours while I waited.  Once they all gathered for the 'pour', so did I. I quickly brought my gear over and set up to watch.  Where should I set up, what would I see, etc.  I watched the first pour so I knew where I could stand in order to watch.  After watching the first pour, I located behind some seats set up for visitors and set to painting.

Since there was a time lapse of approx 1/2 hour between pours, I painted the person who was watching (or as I phrase 'guarding') the flame.  It was really interesting.  This all happened outside on a bare patch of earth surrounded on one side by trees and a hill, on the other the driveway.  It was great to see and I was told they have took the forms out of the molds today.  I hope to return to see the finished products.
